"Water Mountain... is a very supportive place to train.  The instructors really understand how to work with you to achieve success, and to continually build upon and reinforce your successes.  Everyone, students and instructors, work together to form an extremely positive environment.  When I walked into the studio for the first time, I immediately felt at ease--sometimes I come in early just to relax in the calming environment.  I feel sincerely respected by everyone I've met here.  WMMS is like a supportive family, always encouraging me to new levels...."
--Alan Kaufmann, East Flag

"Water Mountain has improved my health so much-sometimes I can hardly believe it!  When I first started coming here I was having so much pain, I was just about disabled.  Now I'm energetic, feel younger, and I'm nearly pain free.  Water Mountain has changed my life for the better....You can come here to handle stress, have a more balanced life and receive lots of positive support both from the staff and from all the friends you make here."
--Maureen White, West Flag

"Water Mountain Martial Arts has been a huge asset for my sons now ages 11 and 13.  They not only benefit from the strength and skill building, but also are learning self-defense and discipline.  They have learned that it takes a lot of hard work to accomplish some goals in life, but also that it is worth it all in the end."
--Judy Stratton, Upper Greenlaw

"Master Steenrod, I am writing you this letter to thank you and Water Mountain Martial Society for providing martial and lifestyle programs that have been part of my life for several years now.  WMMS allowed me to achieve success, and continually build upon my successes, by reinforcing my positive frame of mind, and by cultivating the processes that move students toward imminent objectives using a clear agenda."
--Josh Edwards, East Flagstaff

"Water Mountain Martial Society is a great place to train. Besides the beautiful facility, every instructor is professional, respectful, easy to get along with, and concerned with your progress. The lessons are always very useful and practical, and techniques are demonstrated in a way that makes them quite easy to learn and do, often with surprising results.

A question I've often found myself asking after a class is: "Was I really just able to do that?".

Training at Water Mountain has also improved my health in a long-term and lasting way, both physically and mentally. After training there I find myself with much less stress, as well as an increased drive to do well in life,  with the skills and confidence I need to do so.

I would encourage anyone interested in training to try it out. You won't be sorry!"
--James "Bolt Cutter" Patton, West Flagstaff

Heaven Fist 10,00 Kung Fu

Heaven Fist 10,000 is a name for the hand to hand system of the warrior clan of Soon.  Its development began approximately 1,500 years ago with the start of the clan.  It is a kung fu system designed to train you to face highly adverse situations and ingrain in you the behaviors necessary for success in life.  The art specializes in one against many combat situations, the most common self-defense situation.

Physically, it has moves similar to most other striking martial arts.  There are, however, two large, easily recognized differences from other striking arts.  The first difference is in the use of opponent controlling to position the body of the opponent so that it can be easily overwhelmed.  The second is in the extensive knowledge of human behavior.  The knowledge of human behavior is used for 5 purposes:

  1. Learning to quickly and accurately read a person, so that you'll know how he is going to move.
  2. Learning to quickly and accurately read a group, so that you'll know how the group itself is going to behave.
  3. Gaining great insight into yourself, the tendencies you possess, and the behaviors you'll exhibit under stress.
  4. Learning how to control yourself, and modify your behaviors as you need to to succeed in a given situation.
  5. Creating highly efficient and balanced training systems that allow you to develop high level skill quickly.

Training is guided by a simple 4 part training model:

 Technique

 Body Control

 Tactics

 Mind Control

 Demonstrating Body Control Training

 Body Control Training
like this can be learned by any healthy individual.

Technique: This refers to the actual physical techniques used to control, generate force, or deflect force.  All techniques are trained according to six categories of performance, and are scored in all six categories.  Technical training is the emphasis of training through the first black belt.  While combat is taught, combative emphasis doesn't begin until training for second black.

Tactics: This refers to combative training.  Heaven Fist uses a system known as combat cores.  These models or ways of fighting ranging from very simple to complex.  Tactics scale from working with one opponent to many opponents.  This is the emphasis from first to second black.

Body Control: This training category covers physical conditioning, conditioning against blows, flexibility, and the ability to make your body do things on command.  It is taught in gradual steps throughout the training process.

Mind Control:  This training covers understanding your mind under stress, creating the right mind necessary for high level performance, recovering from intense stressors, learning to control and release body hormones, learning the mental states for advanced combat, and learning to read your opponent.  Elements for success in society are also learned as part of this training.  Mind control is taught in gradual steps throughout the entire process.
