 What do you do in Qi Gong?

 

  1. You hold your body in different physical positions to correct the flow of qi, “natural energy,” in the body.  The time period for those positions is very short initially, no more than a twenty county, to avoid excess muscle tension.
  2. You share your experiences with other members of the training community at Water Mountain to learn the differences and similarities of your experiences.
  3. You learn to break the “stress shape” of your body.  Right now, even as you read this, you are holding your body in an unnatural position.  There are muscles that are being held tense that don’t need to be held tense.  Take your shoulders for example.  Can you move them downward?  If you can, they were being held upward by muscle tension.  As you read this, are you lifting something?  If you’re not, there is no mechanical reason for your shoulders to be tense.  What about your jaw?  Or your forehead?  You see, your body is shaped by the pressures of the outside world.  Keeping those muscles tense requires energy, resources, and a certain cocktail of hormones in your body.  Having those muscles tense changes the blood flow in your body—that’s going to cause all sorts of vascular problems, like high blood pressure and limb coldness.
  4. You study the theory of qi gong.  It’s quite fascinating to learn about yourself and your place in the world.

We used a GSR feedback device (galvanic skin response) to measure changes in stress level.  The GSR is one of the primary parts of lie detector, and is very commonly and professionally used to measure changes in stress.  This is what we’ve found:

 

A person sitting at rest, can drop his or her stress levels 33% after about 30 minutes.  Longer periods of sitting do not seem to drop it any farther.  SO just resting creates a 33% drop.  It goes up once the person stops resting, almost instantly!
